TBG Awards Cash Grant

July 9, 2006, Nantucket, Massachusetts

That Barry Girl Foundation, Thriving not just Surviving awarded a cash grant to a woman in treatment for breast cancer on Nantucket today. The $1000 no strings attached grant is a result of that Barry Girl Foundation’s fundraiser at the Nantucket Iron Man on June 4th where the foundation partnered with Nantucket Hospice to raise money for women on the island with breast cancer.

The Foundation had two “Barry Girl” teams raising money to provide emotional and financial support to breast cancer patients on the island. It was so successful that the event also supported the distribution of the I Wish I Knew series of books for patients on Cape Cod as well as the cash grant to a woman in treatment on the island. The I Wish I Knew series of books by Fanny Barry, foundation president, offer emotional support to women in treatment, advice to family and friends on how to help and a life affirming glimpse at how coming face to face with mortality can change you life in a positive way.

Fanny, a breast cancer survivor, was enthusiastic about the event. “The race is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy yourself with family and friends and help someone in the process” says Barry, who participated in the board paddle on one of the two “That Barry Girl” relay teams. The event has become an institution on Nantucket and is known for its unusual events and unpredictable results. The race combines six legs that are done by relay or individually starting with a 2.5 mile run, a 1 mile board paddle, a 2.5 mile run on the sand with a 20 lb. pack on your back, a mile swim and one mile run, 20 miles on the bike, and a final 10 kilometer run to the finish line.

The mission of That Barry Girl Foundation is helping women with breast cancer right now, until there is a cure. For more information on the foundation, the I Wish I Knew series and upcoming events visit www.thatbarrygirl.org.
