I Wish I Knew Books Clear Customs for Mexico City

Two hundred and twenty five of the I Wish I Knew series in Spanish were cleared customs today for delivery to Grupo de Recuperación Total - Grupo Reto, A.C. located in Mexico City, Mexico!

Grupo Reto has affiliates in every state in the country offering medical and adjunct therapies to women with breast cancer. They will distribute the series in Mexico City and through Grupo Reto affiliates.

This donation was made possible by a generous grant from the Greene Family of Oregon. With sponsors like this and the sponsors that enabled us to send books to Wellness Centers across the US and in several foreign countries we are bringing emotional support to women daily.

Two Grants Awarded Today

That Barry Girl awarded two grants today through Patient to Patient, Heart to Heart, a cancer support network at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. One grant was a result of the successful fundraising effort with Enchanted Designs by Molly that ran from October 08 to January 09. The second is a result of generous end of year donations from several supporters that enabled That Barry Girl Foundation to send books to care centers nation wide and in several foreign countries. Patient to Patient, Heart to Heart will administer the grants to patients in treatment to be used at the patients' discretion because ultimately, only the patient knows what will work best.

Soon to make another grant and a note from the 4th Survivor

This month That Barry Girl will make another grant to a survivor through Patient to Patient Heart to Heart. We are contiinuing to make a difference in the lives of patients and survivors.

And here is what Barbara had to say about her visit to Casa Wish.
Casa Wish was blissfully peaceful, a perfect place to rest, recuperate and discover new energy. If there is a sisterhood of survivors, Fanny Barry exemplifies the best of it. Not only did she create this tropical haven but she makes sure that every guest is comfortable and has everything she needs. Staying with Fanny provides a glimpse of life here, a much different experience than being at a commercial hotel. Although Fanny calls the guest house a cabana, to me it was a wondrous tree house since the second floor bedroom, sitting area and deck look out on the upper branches of large palm trees. The limestone sand beach is across the street and down a short path where the turquoise and blue colors are everything the Caribbean promises - and warm, too. Many small hotels along the beach offer good and reasonable meals in informal restaurants and bars. It was hard to leave and in some part of my mind, I didn't.

Look at our photos when you get a chance.

The Fourth Survivor to Visit Casa Wish Arrives Today

We have another guest coming for rest and recuperation today. This year Casa Wish is hosting survivors every month through April. Who knows, actually, we may host women every month if we get more bookings. Regardless, so far it has been a marvelously rewarding experience for That Barry Girl and the women who have visited. Stay tuned for essays from the visitors. And thanks for the support you give that helps another woman thrive, not just survive.

October Collaborations that Run All Year Long

This October marks our second year collaborating with Enchanted Designs by Molly to raise funds to help women with breast cancer emotionally, financially and as they move into recuperation. Once again, Molly has designed a unique bracelet for That Barry Girl Foundation, called Reflections. Created in subtle shades of silver and gold Swarovski crystals with sterling findings and a crystal dangle at the clasp, the bracelet not only symbolizes the circle of love but also engenders reflection on the complexity of life, like the complexity of the crystals themselves.

The bracelets will be available at 3 Salons this year, Persona Salon on Newbury Street in Boston, Headlines Salon on Main Street in Falmouth and Rudolph Adamo Salon on Stagecoach Way in Cohasset, Massachusetts. As always, we can take orders on line at That Store, www.thatbarrygirl.org, and ship direct.

I Wish I Knew series inspires author on Alzheimers

Dr. Zoe Lewis met Fanny in Miami and also came to visit Casa Wish in Mexico. While she and Fanny were discussing projects and how to help people, Dr. Lewis thought that the sort of practical advice imparted in the I Wish I Knew Series and their easy to read and artistic format could also help Alzheimers patients. Her book, I Hope They Know, is soon to be published and contains an essay from Fanny on "Survivorship". It also offers some very similar advice to patients, their family and friends, showing that many people can benefit from the insights we gain through the cancer experience, especially if we share. See the extended entry to read Fanny's essay. For more information on Dr. Lewis' effort, visit her web site at www.zoealewis.com

Casa Wish Hosts the First Survivor

Casa Wish hosted the first survivor November 20 - 30, 2007. Joan stayed for 10 days of rest and relaxation and tropical healing. As promised, here is the excerpt she provided from her journal on the experience.

"What an amazing gift to escape breast cancer for 10 days in Mexico! Fanny’s vision is truly extraordinary and Casa Wish is a healing and beautiful retreat. The pace here is tranquil and unhurried – the big daily decisions are lounge chair or hammock? What should we eat? Before or after the beach?
My cancer journey began in November of 2006 and I have undergone 3 surgeries to finally remove all of the cancer. I have an upcoming surgery in December for reconstruction. My only income has been the loving donations of family and friends, so a vacation had never entered my mind. Hester Hill Schnipper at Beth Israel put Fanny and I in contact, we met for coffee and she invited me to her home in Tulum. Ten days in Mexico at Fanny’s place is just what the doctor should have ordered.
Prior to this I had only known of Fanny though her writing and illustrations of the “I wish I knew” series of books which really touched my heart.

The chocolate base is accented by white and pink czeck glass crystals with sterling silver finishes and threads: chocolate for energy and grounding, white for light and clarity, and pink for love and breast cancer because, once diagnosed, breast cancer becomes a part of who you are, whether patient, family member or friend; all are altered to some degree. Profits from the sales go to That Barry Girl Foundation to offer emotional, financial and recuperative support for women in treatment. Visit that store and order one today.

Dr. Zoe Lewis visits Casa Wish

Dr. Zoe Lewis visited Casa Wish to help Fanny brainstorm on how to market the I Wish I Knew books and to review how to improve Casa Wish to make it home for survivors. Zoe's conclusions: The I Wish I Knew series is great and the Spanish version really fits a need; Tulum is a wonderful place to recover with beautiful beaches, interesting history, wonderful food and super culture; Casa Wish is wonderful but still rustic, "great location but electricity would really make it easier to be here. The candles are romantic but I would like to read at night." And of course Doctor Lewis thinks Tulum is a great place for yoga. She and Fanny practiced most days while she was there.
So - Fanny's challenges are to keep getting the I Wish I Knew books out there and get hooked up with some solar power for Casa Wish. Step by step, it will happen.

Wine Women and Shoes

"Wine, Women. and Shoes", held Saturday, April 28 at the Back Bay Events Center in Boston, was a huge success! The Healing Garden raised sufficient funds to break ground for their much needed expansion and construction will commence this fall. Fanny Barry participated in the fashion show with 11 other women. All the women have links to breast cancer, either personal or through family and friends. The show, which higlighted spring fashions from four prestigious Boston fashion retailers: Tess of Newton Center, Sumi Seo and The Studio, also of Newton Center and Sarah Campbell from Boston's South End. The fashions were coordinated with shoes from Nordstroms. The show embodied That Barry Girl Foundations' goal, showing how lives affected by breast cancer can "thrive, not just survive" and beat the disease by remaining vibrant and beautiful. The event included a prestigious shoe sale, a live auction, a silent wine auction and the fasion show. For Fanny's favorite pictures of the event, visit our photo link.
